Referral traffic: meaning, examples and how to analyze it
Referral traffic is visitors who came through a link on another website: a blog post, a directory, a forum, a review or a partner site. In Google Analytics it's the Referral channel; in LightMetrica it's Referrals.
The word comes from the referrer — the address of the page someone came from. The browser sends it when a link is clicked, and the analytics tool uses it to figure out the source.
How it differs from other sources
A tracker first checks whether the referrer is a known source:
- Search engines — Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and others — go to search.
- Social networks and messengers — LinkedIn, X, YouTube, Telegram — go to their own groups.
- AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini — have their own AI assistants group in LightMetrica.
- Ads are recognised by UTM tags like
utm_medium=cpcor click IDs likegclid.
Anything else with a referrer counts as a referral. Links within your own site aren't a source at all.
Examples of referral traffic
- A blog post that recommends your product.
- Your listing in a directory or marketplace.
- A forum thread where someone linked to your guide.
- A partner or integration page.
- A press article mentioning you.
How to analyze it
- Find the referring sites. In LightMetrica go to Sources → Websites for a list of domains with visits, bounce rate and time on site.
- Compare quality, not just volume. A site that sends few visitors with a high conversion rate is worth investing in.
- Find the actual pages. Once you know the domain, look for the article and consider asking for an update.
- Watch for new domains. A new source often means a new mention you didn't know about.
Referral spam
Sometimes strange domains show up with hundreds of visits, a 100% bounce rate and zero time on site. That's referral spam: bots fake the referrer to lure site owners into visiting. Don't click those domains and leave them out of your conclusions. LightMetrica filters known bots and automated browsers, but new spam domains appear in every tool.
FAQ
Does referral traffic help SEO? The visits themselves don't. But links from relevant sites that send real visitors are usually good for search visibility too.
Why did a click from another site show up as direct? The referring site may not send a referrer — because of its referrer policy or an HTTPS-to-HTTP hop. For links you control, add UTM tags with the UTM builder.
Why does my own domain appear as a referrer? Usually it's a subdomain or an old domain the tracker doesn't treat as yours. In LightMetrica, subdomains of the domain in your site settings count as internal.
