Pages per visit (pages per session): meaning and formula

Updated: October 14, 2026

Pages per visit (pages per session) is the average number of pages someone opens during one visit. If a person lands on your home page, goes to the catalogue and opens a product, that visit has 3 pages.

Formula

Pages per visit = total page views / number of visits

1,200 page views across 400 visits gives 3.0 pages per visit.

What counts as a page view

The formula is the same everywhere, but what counts as a page view depends on the tool:

Typical values

As with bounce rate, the best benchmark is your own trend and the comparison between your traffic sources.

When more pages is a bad sign

A high number isn't always good. It also rises when people can't find what they need: they wander through menus, go back, try different sections. If pages per visit goes up while conversion rate goes down, check your navigation and site search.

How to increase pages per visit

  1. "Related articles" and "read next" at the end of posts.
  2. Clear menus and breadcrumbs.
  3. Contextual links inside the text to deeper explanations.
  4. Product recommendations and "frequently bought together" in stores.

FAQ

What's the difference between page views and pages per visit? Page views is the total number of pages opened in a period. Pages per visit divides that by the number of visits.

Why does pages per visit differ between tools? Tools handle single-page apps, session timeouts and bot filtering differently. Compare trends within one tool.

Does pages per visit affect SEO? Not directly — search engines don't read your analytics. But good internal linking, which raises it, helps both users and crawling.
